Neuroscience

Neuroscience – we call it science in 2016 but what will they call it in 2116? Medical science in 1816 is something we call barbaric or medieval now. What was it Bones McCoy said in Star Trek about dialysis being dark ages?

I am sitting here in the living room blogging at 12:30 am because this so called “science” doesn’t work as well as we like to think it does. In the last 3 years I have suffered through 500+ days of migraine pain. Why? Don’t know. We still understand what causes them or how to cure them once and for all. (Don’t get me wrong, I have an awesome neurologist and a wonderful anesthesiologist that have greatly reduced the incidences)

So, how can you ask is the migraine not as bad a problem for me now? It’s because with migraines I have some medicine that gives me relief. My problem now is the RLS–an even more mysterious issue. There isn’t even consensus among the medical community that it even exists. I can tell you that it is very much real and in some ways even worse than migraines.

When I have a migraine, I take a pill, go to bed and wake up feeling better. With RLS, I take a pill, then another and another and still my legs, arms etc won’t quit moving. I lie down, then I get up, then back down, then I get up and walk circles in the living room for 20 minutes. Then I lie back down, then I get up and take a hot shower and  then back in front of the fan and to bed. Then i get up again. I’ve tried magnesium. Potassium. Calcium. Mirapex. Requip. Ibiprofen. Epsom salts. Capsaicin creme. Biofreeze.

After all that, I am up blogging. This has been my routine every few nights for 8 months now. It gets old. It doesn’t end…
